(Johann) Peter (Theodor) Janssen is born in Duesseldorf as the first son of  Theodor (1816- 1894) and Laura (1822- 1889) nee Hasenclever (Uncle: J.P.Hasenclever, 1810-1853). Peter visits a private school; first artistic training by his father and the animal painter Lachenwitz.
 

Joins the Royal Art Academy in Duesseldorf; Janssen becomes a student of Carl Müllers, Carl Sohn and Eduard Bendemann

Travels to Holland, Belgium

Spends time in southern Germany (Munich); performs portrait commissions in Dresden

Produces his first independant oil painting: Peter Denying Christ. This painting has been re-aquired by the artist's family.
It is now being conserved in the USA. This process is  documented here.
 

Participation in the competition for the Beteiligung Janssens an dem Wettbewerb um die ADecoration of the town hall of Krefeld (2nd and 3rd tender); Janssen is the first winner (Nov. 1859)
